Karen + Tony | Paebaek – Turtle Bay Oahu, Hawaii

We recently had the wonderful opportunity to travel to the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii with Karen and Tony for their wedding at theTurtle Bay Resort.  We knew Tony through a mutual friend, and were thrilled to get to know Karen through the process.  They live in San Francisco, and most of Tony’s family lives in Korea, so Hawaii was the perfect place to meet up to celebrate!  We’ve travelled to Hawaii several times on vacation on our own, and Malarie spent all her childhood Summers there in her youth with her grandparents, (Lucky! I was sweating it out in Arizona) so we jumped at the chance to shoot there.  We photographed them for three days, the first day being the Paebaek Ceremony to honor Tony’s Korean heritage.

The Hanbok (Karen) and Gwanbok (Tony) might be my favorite ceremonial attire, so ornate and dramatic.

Tony had an emotional moment during the ceremony with his parents.Turtle_Bay_Oahu_Wedding_Photographer-0011

This part of the ceremony the family throws dates and chestnuts into a part of the Hanbok, and however many are caught is how many children they’ll have.  I think the total was somewhere in the 30’s, so they’d better get busy. 🙂

Tony had to perform a feat of strength to show his marriage worthiness. He looks pretty comfy here, so I’d say he passes.Turtle_Bay_Oahu_Wedding_Photographer-0014Turtle_Bay_Oahu_Wedding_Photographer-0015Turtle_Bay_Oahu_Wedding_Photographer-0016Turtle_Bay_Oahu_Wedding_Photographer-0017
